Hastily constructed during 1940-41 and sited on Lawford Heath by the road to Long Lawford, Church Lawford airfield was originally planned as a dispatch site for bombers (Smith 2004, 131). However, it was principally used to train aircrew (ibid, 132). Lawford Heath was also the site of a Royal Observer Corps underground monitoring post. These visual observation posts, first developed in the 1920s and 1930s, sought to track aircraft movements (Lowry 1996, 32).
