Summary Findspot - a hoard of Roman coins in an earthen ware vessel was found in 1885. The coins were in a field 400m west of St James's Church, Old Milverton.

1 Earthen urn with about 200 'third brass' found 1885. About 60 which were examined ranged from Gallienus to Probus.
3 A 3rd century coin hoard is recorded hereabouts from a gravel pit.

The Roman period comes after the Iron Age and before the Saxon period.

The Roman period in Britain began in 43 AD when a Roman commander called Aulus Plautius invaded the south coast, near Kent. There were a series of skirmishes with the native Britons, who were defeated. In the months that followed, more Roman troops arrived and slowly moved westwards and northwards.
