Summary The site of a canal wharf, where vessels would have loaded and unloaded during the Imperial period. It was located between the canal and the eastern end of Western Road, and is marked on the Ordnance Survey map of 1886.

Source Number  

1 Existence of the canal caused the growth of a small industrial area at One Elm where a short canal arm was built parallel to the Birmingham Road. This area is visible on the OS 6" 1886 map and is shown as extending almost to Arden Street. On modern maps the arm has been filled in leaving only a small indentation in the canal bank.

This period comes after the Post Medieval period and before the modern period and starts with beginning of the Industrial Revolution in 1750. It includes the second part of the Hannoverian period (1714 – 1836) and the Victorian period (1837 – 1901). The Imperial period ends with the start of the First World War in 1914.
