Findspot - Post Medieval finds

Summary Findspot - during some groundworks a large number of roof tile, pottery, bottle glass and clay tobacco pipe fragments were found at the rear of a house on St Nicholas Street, Warwick. All the finds dated to the Post Medieval period.

1 Trenches dug. No features observed in the sections but a large number of finds were noted in the spoil which was still on site. A large number of fragments of roof tiles were noted, along with pottery, bottle glass, and gragments of clay tobacco pipe dating to the 17th and 18th centures. Pottery consisted of feather-trailed slipware and dark-on-light slipware, manganese mottled ware, Midlands Yellow and black-glazed types. Clay tobacco pipe bowl was of an Oswald G5 tuype dating to c.1640-60.

The medieval period comes after the Saxon period and before the post medieval period.

The Medieval period begins in 1066 AD.
This was the year that the Normans, led by William the Conqueror (1066 – 1087), invaded England and defeated Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings in East Sussex.
The Medieval period includes the first half of the Tudor period (1485 – 1603 AD), when the Tudor family reigned in England and eventually in Scotland too.

The end of the Medieval period is marked by Henry VIII’s (1509 – 1547) order for the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the years running up to 1539 AD. The whole of this period is sometimes called the Middle Ages.
