Architectural fragments date late C15 to mid C16

Posted on 26/04/2014

It's the centre-head of a late 15th to mid-16th century glazed window frame, of at least two lights with a central vertical divider known as a mullion. There's not enough left to show what part of the house it comes from, as windows of this sort could have been used in open halls or storeyed parts of a house, though the glass groove suggests it may have been a storeyed area (ie: a room with a ceiling). The triangular feature on the top is probably a mason's mark, identifying his work, although occasionally such marks record the completion of a 'fair' or acceptable carved surface (though these are usually cross or angular hourglass shapes). Robert Waterhouse (Field Archaeologist, Société Jersiaise). Personal communication after being sent seeing photos of stonework recovered from drive. Email jrussell8978@gmail.com for further details.
